Dual/Multiple Citizenship
Amendments to the Constitution of Malta have made it possible for persons to
hold the citizenship of another country without losing their Maltese citizenship;
furthermore detailed provisions with regard to citizenship have now been prescribed
under ordinary legislation. The new provisions now make it possible for Maltese
citizens to hold dual citizenship on emigration and in other circumstances.
• An added advantage for obtaining Maltese Citizenship
Since Malta has now joined the European Union, obtaining Maltese citizenship
would entitle a person to all the free movement rights enjoyable under EU legislation.
Furthermore, obtaining Maltese citizenship under the Dual Citizenship provisions
implies the added advantage that a Maltese citizen may avail himself of the special
treatment granted by the EU to Maltese workers to be able to fetch work in other EU
States without the usual restrictions which are applicable to newly acceded countries
on the continent.
